about
In 1857 the Mistik Krewe of Comus gave the first organized
parade on Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Festivities including
processions had existed many years before but not as well organized
during the Carnival season.
Comus in Greek mythology was the god of festivity, revels, and nocturnal dalliances. He was the cup bearer and son of Bacchus/Dionysus.
In New Orleans the organization still holds its annual ball on Mardi Gras.
