about
When New Orleans was under the French Crown, during the early 18th century, a street in the French Quarter was named Rue du Maine. Later on New Orleans became the capital of the Spanish province of Luisiana (1762-1803) this same street then bore the name Calle del Maine. During the 19th century the name was Americanized and now bears the name Dumaine Street. I have lived on this street for most of my life.
Composition of this music was inspired by the street brass bands of New Orleans which go back to even the colonial period up to the present. Originally they had a classic European sound, then later jazzy, Creole Caribbean elements entered and became an important part of the music.
